Acupuncture Jo

Acupuncture and Asian Medicine became a part of my life when I was about 16 years old. At the time, my sister was working as a receptionist for an Acupuncturist. She would come home with all of these fascinating stories about the cases that were treated at that office. Eventually, I got the opportunity to experience Acupuncture, at the place she was working, and I loved it! Over the years, as I began to pursue a Pre-Med major, I was developing more and more menstrual pain that was requiring more and more painkillers to manage. I sought out the help of an OB/GYN but they were unable to find a cause for the pain and told me “it was normal”. They also said it might “go away after you have kids” and “birth control may help you with that”. Being in my late teens, neither one of those were reasonable options to me. I was not ready to become a mom and I was not willing to take hormones for indefinite periods of time, not fulling knowing what the long term effects would be. It was then that I remembered all the stories about the Acupuncture place and decided to look into that as a treatment option.

I clearly remember calling my sister in a panic because I was at work and was having horrible menstrual cramping; and the over the counter medicines were not even touching it. I knew I could take the prescription pain killers but also didn’t want to continue depending on them. She told me to come in for a treatment right away. I walked into that office, hunched over, hands on my belly, practically to the point of tears. Her boss, the Acupuncturist,  took me into a room and performed a treatment on me. Within a few minutes, the cramping started to subside little by little. After a few minutes more, I had managed to relax, so much so, that I feel asleep. I came to when the Acupuncturist came back into the room, calmly removed my needles and told me I was good to go. I wasn’t sure what to expect but I got up feeling relaxed and relieved. I went back to work and went on about my day; completely pain free!

I continued getting treatments month after month until I realized, “why don’t I just study this instead of the medicine that didn’t help me”? And my journey into Asian Medicine thus began. I graduated with my Master’s in Oriental Medicine in late 2009. I became board certified by the NCCAOM in 2010. I had the honor of interning at Shuguang Hospital in Shanghai during the summer of 2010 (concentrating in the Gynecology Department) and began practicing that same year. I spent several years seeing many different cases and treating patients with a wide range of conditions (everything from Arthritis to Yeast Infections). Eventually, I decided I really wanted to focus on my 2 greatest passions within Asian Medicine…Women’s Reproductive Health and Skin Care. I immersed myself in the treatment of Reproductive Wellness and Women’s Health in 2016. Since then, I have been working almost exclusively with patients who are trying to conceive in some capacity (naturally or medically assisted).  I then became certified in Pelvic Hydrotherapy and Facial Rejuvenation in 2019.

I am passionate about educating women/uterine carriers who are dealing with PCOS, Ovarian Cysts, Uterine Fibroids and Polyps, Endometriosis, Adenomyosis, Menopause,  Amenorrhea and/or Dysmenorrhea (to name a few) that these conditions can be treated, and managed, with Asian Medicine. I enjoy explaining to them that they don't need to get on hormones or birth control to manage menstrual issues or menopause symptoms.  I also  enjoy offering them alternatives to jumping straight into a medicated cycle for assistance with fertility as well as  being able to support them through Assisted Reproductive Therapy to help them have the best chances of implantation. Continuing care into their firt trimester, Labor prep and Postpartum Recovery gives me a great sense of fulfillment. Supporting women/uterine carriers in each phase of their lives is truly an honor and my goal.

That being said, it is very important for partners to be an active part of this process and partners need care too. Even if your goals have nothing to do with fertility, it is still MY goal to help you achieve YOUR wellness goals. Whether you are recovering from an injury, working through some back pain or suffering from Sciatica, I am here to support your healing to the best of my abilities.
